Skills and Habits

We are intelligent beings, and with that, we have a unique ability.
The ability being that we can learn new skills, implement habits, and then operate with them as new defaults.
Before the development of the pre-frontal cortex, we weren't the brightest when it came to social structure, communication, and planning for the future.
Although, with our modern brains and our ability to learn new skills we can create a life around these high leverage skills (HLS.)
Once we start to implement them as habits and learn how to make them function for many different types of life, we begin to thrive.
This is the reason why the skills and habits section exists.
To start learning about how to implement new habits, how to break down high leverage skills and subsequently how to create a better life.
Higher Leverage Skills
When we think of higher leverage skills, we need to think about skills that can help us either learn other skills faster or attain a better life in a more sustainable and faster way.
That is the root of high leverage skills.
More specifically the definition is:
A Skill That Applies To Multiple Fields, Providing a Benefit in Each, But Only Needing To Be Learned In One.
And it is through these skills that we can take charge of our health, our wealth, our happiness and our spirituality.
Most people don't know what high leverage skills are.
Now one of the most common examples I use... Breathing.
I'm assuming some of you are shaking your heads saying "breathing is not a skill!"
Let me kindly disagree and show you why.
Breath is one of the most fundamental and primal elements of our nature.
A heartbeat is what is used to show if someone is alive or dead (in the traditional sense) and when falling in love or getting scared we often say "I lost my breath."
We don't think of it as a skill.
And in reality, it is one of the most critical higher leverage skills.
Heck through breathing Wim Hof has single-handedly changed the way that people view the cold.
Yes, you read that right.
The FRIGGIN cold.
Wim Hof has done marvelous expeditions based on his breathing paradigm and mindset, one of which is hiking Mt. Everest... In just shorts and boots.
That is what we call a High Leverage Skill.
Breathing doesn't stop with the cold though, here is a list of some of what it can help with:
- Max Exertion
- Cardiovascular health
- Lactic Acid
- Energy Flow
- Keeps Focus
- Lowers stress
- Unlocks the Pineal gland
- Calms the mind via meditation
And the truth is... It can do a lot more.
That is why higher leverage skills can be so critical, because not only do they help with what you are immediately doing, but they likely have rollover into many different areas.
Where skills help to ingrain behaviors that allow us to do things better, habits create a foundation to how we do things.
That's a fundamental difference many people don't think about.
Its great to learn a new play or skill in football, but if you don't have the proper mechanics when throwing the ball (i.e., ingrained habits) than odds are you'll be pretty lousy.
On the other hand, ingraining habit will lead to improved well-being, and that's why you are here.
Now, when it comes to habits, everyone has ones that they think should be in place.
Habits can be anything from making your bed every morning to drinking water upon waking. There are so many forms, combinations, and kinds that we can start to ingrain.
For now, I want you to think about what habits you would want to have.
